Timeline of Milk's LIfe
May 22nd, 1930 Harvey Milk is born in Woodmere, New York.
1943-1947 Milk attends Bay Shore High School as a basketball player and a football captain. He knows he is gay but is still in the closet at this time.
1947-1951 Harvey attends New York State Teachers College in Albany and earns a math degree.
1951-1955 Harvey serves in the Navy and is an expert deep sea diver. He is honorably discharged.
1956-1961 Milk meets Joe Campbell. They will be together for 6 years. At this time, Milk is a high school math teacher and a basketball coach at Hewlitt High school in NYC.
1970 After almost a decade of living in the closet, Milk finally has the courage to open his sexuality.
1972 Harvey and his new boyfriend, Scott Smith, move to the Castro in San Francisco.
November, 1973 Milk runs for supervisor of San Francisco for the first time. He does not have enough support and he loses by a landslide.
November 8th, 1977 Milk is elected to the board of supervisors for his district in his fourth run for elected office. He becomes the first openly gay man elected to public office in the US.
November, 1978 Harvey and his protests defeated a new bill which would have fired all gay teachers and their supporters. One of Milk's greatest accomplishments.
November 27th, 1978 Dan White assassinates Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone at City Hall. Over 30,000 people peacefully march from Castro to City Hall and hold a candlelight vigil.
December 2nd, 1978 Milk's friends scatter his ashes, along with Kool-Aid and bubble bath, into the pacific ocean.
May 21st, 1979 Dan White is sentenced to only 7 years in prison. Thousands of people are furious and hold riots at City Hall. These riots were known as the White Night Riots.
January 7th, 1984 Dan White is released from prison after only 5 years and moves back to San Francisco with his family.
October 21st, 1985 Dan White commits suicide in his garage.
