Milk's greatest accomplishments
Harvey Milk's legacy as an openly gay politician and a civil rights leader of the 1970's was a very huge influence on gay rights activists today. Harvey Milk was named one of the most influential people of the 20th century by Time Magazine and is an Icon in San Francisco, California and the gay community. He has achieved so many great things for the gay community.
Firstly, he was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the history of the United States.
One of Milk's biggest accomplishments as Supervisor was passing a gay rights ordinance and defeating Proposition 6 (also known as the Briggs Initiative), which would have banned openly gay and lesbian people from working in public schools (biography.com).
After Milk's assassination, he was remembered in several different ways. Movies and documentaries were created. The Oscar-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk by Robert Epstein(1984) was a great overview of the life and career of Harvey Milk. Also, the movie drama Milk(2008), received eight academy award nominations and won the award twice.
There are several public schools named after Milk, the Harvey Milk High School in New York City and in his old Castro neighborhood, the elementary school bears his name.
